분포; 서태평양: 한국의 제주도 포함 남쪽 바다, 일본 전해역, 타이완, 홍콩에 분포. 이 해역보다 더 남쪽의 본종 분포 기록은 다른 유사종(Upeneus guttatus 또는 Upeneus sundaicus)과의 혼동일 가능성 있음.
일반개요; 수염이 진노랑색이다. 꼬리지느러미의 상엽에 2~4개의 적색 줄무늬가 있다. 몸체에는 줄무늬가 없다. 제1등지느러미의 가시는 7개이며 맨 앞의 작은 가시는 없다. 체색은 변이가 많으나 주로 적갈색, 또는 선홍색이다. 연안 모래 바닥에 서식하며 작은 갑각류를 주식한다. 수심 범위는 20~200m.

Distribution: Western Pacific: Jeju Island and southern waters in Korea, all around Japan. Taiwan and Hong Kong. Record from more southern areas are probably mainly misidentifications of Upeneus guttatus or Upeneus sundaicus.
General: With deep yellow barbels. Upper lobe of caudal fin with 2~4 dark bands (red bands when alive). Body without lateral stripe. 1st dorsal fin with 7 spines: 1st spine longest. Variable in body color, but mainly red or red brown. Inhabit sandy regions, depth range: 20~200m. Feed primarily on benthic crustaceans.
