분포; 인도•서태평양: 동아프리카에서 바누아투와 일본 남부까지 분포.
일반개요; 등쪽은 갈색 바탕이며 아래쪽으로 밝아진다. 적색 또는 적갈색의 작은 점들이 다수 찍혀있다. 복부에 불규칙한 모양의 옅은 적색 반점들이 나타날 때도 있다. 윗 입술에서부터 눈을 지나 미병부 끝까지 적색 내지 갈색의 직선 띠가 있고 선의 6군데는 검다. 수염은 짧고 노랗다. 꼬리지느러미의 상엽과 하엽에 5~6개의 검은 사선 무늬가 있다. 제1등지느러미 상층부가 적갈색으로 어둡고 여기에 몇개의 작은 노랑점들이 있다. 빠른 속도로 체색을 변경시킬 수 있으며 야간이나 청소받을 때는 전체적으로 적색이 되면서 무늬들은 진하게 붉어진다. 헤엄쳐다닐 때는 전체적으로 밝아진다. 10~40m 수심의 산호초 주변 모래, 개펄 바닥 쪽에서 산다. 대개의 경우 단독생활, 때에 따라 무리를 짓는다. 기수에도 나타난다. ※ freckle: 주근깨

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: East Africa to Vanuatu, north to southern Japan.
General: Brownish gray dorsally, whitish below. Densely freckled with red to reddish brown, a row of irregular red blotches on lower side. A red to brown stripe from front of upper lip through eye to midbase of caudal fin containing 6 sections that are more darkly pigmented. Barbels short, and yellow. Lobes of caudal fin with 5~6 transverse dark brown to black bands. Upper part of first dorsal fin red to dark reddish brown with several small yellow spots. Can rapidly change colors. Red phase when being cleaned or sleeping at night. When swimming about to feed, it is light colored with black lateral stripe and bars. Sand and mud bottoms near coral reefs in 10~40m. Generally solitary, but forms aggregations. Enter lower reaches of rivers.
