분포; 인도•태평양/한국의 제주도 포함 남해, 일본 남부, 남중국해, 서태평양, 하와이, 홍해 남부 포함. 인도양 남동부. 대서양: 세인트 헬레나, 아센션 제도에 분포.
일반개요; 혀, 입의 바닥, 및 입 천장은 희고 입속의 나머지 부분은 흑청색이다(영명의 뜻). 가슴지느러미의 기부 앞과 가슴의 하부에 비늘이 없다. 완전 성어는 등쪽은 검으며 진한 검정색일 때도 있다. 아래로는 옅어진다. 특별한 무늬는 없다. 젊은 성어와 유어는 약 8~10개의 넓은 흑색 수직 무늬가 있으며 성장하면서 흐려지다가 없어진다. 25~130m 수심의 저층에서 유영 생활을 하며 야행성이다. 단독 또는 소수의 무리로 산다.

Distribution: Indo-Pacific/southern Korea, southern Japan, South China Sea, western Pacific, Hawaii, Indian Ocean including southern Red Sea. Southeast Atlantic: St. Helena and Ascension islands.
General: Tongue, palate, and floor of mouth white, rest of mouth blue black(origin of common English name). Subadult with about 8~10 broad blackish bars separated by lighter spaces. Adult blackish dorsally, lighter blow, no distinctive markings. Body oblong and compressed. A pelagic and demersal species, solitary or forming small groups. Mainly nocturnal.
