Lateral view of Scalloped ribbonfish(Zu cristatus).
This figure is based on a specimen 1m in length. The appearance of Scalloped ribbonfish changes continuously as it grows, and the maximum growth size is at least 150cm, so the specimen in the picture can be called a young adult or a subadult. As this individual grows further, the separated soft rays in the front part of the dorsal fin will disappear or shrink and be joined to the rays behind, and the muscles protruding under the abdomen will also disappear. Most of the dead fish photos of Zu cristatus found on the Internet have very long snouts that appear to be of a completely different species, it is because the mouth, which has a structure that can protrude, easily droops after death.

Distribution; Pacific oceans/eastern and southern seas of Korea including Jeju Island, Japan, China, Taiwan, Philippines, New Zealand, Australia, including the rest tropical and temperate seas. Indian Ocean/South Africa. Atlantic Ocean/east coast of North America and the rest tropical seas. Mediterranean Sea/almost whole area.
General; The body of adult strongly compressed and is like a long ribbon. Body side covered with cycloid scales. Anus is located slightly anterior to the center of body, and eye diameter slightly longer than snout length(this explanation seems to be the case with juveniles). The mouth faces upward, lower jaw protrudes slightly in front of the upper jaw, one row of small conical teeth on both jaws and teeth row extended to front part of the jaws. The upper jaw can protrude forward. The eyes are big. The rear end of the upper jaw reaches below the middle of the pupil. The lateral line starts at the upper edge of the gill cover and gently slopes toward the ventral side and after the anus, it runs along the midline to caudal fin in form of a wave. Large, sharp spines are arranged in one row along the lateral line to the base of the caudal fin.

In the juvenile period, the dorsal fin starts above the pupil, and there are 6 elongated soft rays in front of dorsal fin. As it gets closer to adult fish, the origin of dorsal fin retreats backwards and starts about above the upper edge of the gill cover, and the front long soft rays are reduced to the same length as the rear ones.

Caudal fin large in juveniles, small in adults. Caudal fin(upper lobe) of adult is fan-shaped and pointing upwards. Lower lobe under the main caudal fin with 2-3 separate soft rays. As juvenile grows older, the height of the body behind the anus decreases rapidly and becomes a thin band. There is no anal fin. In juveniles, the soft rays of the pelvic fin are long, but reduces and disappear during growth. The ventral margin of the body is smooth without spines or projections.

Swim vertically in the water column with their head facing upwards. Juveniles under 70 cm in length, silvery in color with around 6 vertical bars on dorsal part of body and 4 on ventral part; tail with around 6 complete black bars; caudal fin blackish, base of fin pale and with scalloped ventral body margin, and bulb-like appendages on the long red dorsal and pelvic fin rays. Caudal fin black. Adults silvery grey in color but paler ventrally; dorsal fin scarlet; caudal fin reddish black, darker distally. After fixation in formalin solution, the body color is gray as a whole. Oceanic and mesopelagic species, depth range 0~90m. Adults feed on small fishes and squids. Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae.

The length at which juvenile characters are lost in trachipterid fishes is variable and can occur relatively late in Zu, in which specimens up to 800 mm SL retain juvenile characters, such as elongate dorsal- and pelvic-fin rays and a scalloped ventral body margin. Juvenile characters, including elongate fin-rays and spotted pigmentation patterns, can be retained in Trachipterus specimens up to 600 mm SL.

Zu_cristatus_Chris_vert450.jpg수직으로 서서 헤엄치는 홍투라치 유어. Swimming upright Juvenile of Scalloped ribbonfish(Zu cristatus). Author/Chris.. The reason the red color is not distinct as like above photo is because the shooting distance is far. In the water, if the distance is far, or depth too deep, the red color of the spectrum disappear first, but if you approach it close and shine a flash light, color come back to life.
