분포;  인도-태평양/한국의 제주도, 일본 남부, 대만, 중국, 베트남, 필리핀, 인도네시아, 호주, 홍해, 페르시아 만, 동아프리카, 하와이, 로드 하우 섬, 라파 섬, 라인 섬, 투아모토 섬에 분포.
일반개요; 몸 바탕 색은 황갈색이며 10 여 개의 수직 검은 반점들이 전체에 걸쳐 일정 간격으로 놓여있다. 머리와 체측에 밝은 백색 내지 옅은 청색 작은 점들이 수평 방향으로 다섯 줄 배열되어 있다. 성어는 졔1등지느러미의 세 번째 가시가 실처럼 길게 연장되어 있다. 종열 비늘 수는 23-25이다. 비늘은 빗 비늘이다. 주둥이와 두 눈 사이를 제외하고 머리에 비늘이 있다. 전새개골 바로 위 코너에 3-9 개의 가시가 좁은 간격으로 나 있다. 꼬리지느러미는 둥글다. 물이 흐린 내해와 라군 1 - 20 m 수심의 해조류가 덮인 바위 바닥이나 자갈 밭에 산다. 바닥에 있는 구멍을 피신처로 사용한다. 혼자 있거나 소수 무리로 있다. 저서 무척추동물을 먹는다. 알은 바닥에 붙여 낳는다.

Distribution; Indo-Pacific/Jeju Island Korea, southern Japan, Taiwan, China, Vetnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, Red Sea, Persian gulf, East Africa, Hawai, Lord Howe Island, Rapa, Line, and Tuamoto Islands.
General; Body tan to black in color with light spots; midside with small elongate dark spots; short vertical bars or saddles above; characterized further by prolonged third dorsal spine , forms long filament in adult; longitudinal scale series 23-25; ctenoid scales; head scaled except snout and interorbital space; 3-9 close-set spines on edge of preopercle just above the corner; rounded caudal fin; depth of body 3.0-3.6 in SL. Found on algal-coated reef rock and rubble of inner flats and turbid lagoons. Takes refuge in burrows or holes in the reef. Benthic. Feeds on small benthic invertebrates. Solitary or in small group. Benthic spawner. depth range 1 - 20 m
