It is not easy to define the color pattern of Bearded silverside in one word. Even in the fish literatures, there are various explanations that conflict with each other. If you observe at several photos of fresh individuals, the pattern is not consistent and is very variable. However, if I had to draw a conclusion overall, I could say as follow. The back is light blue-gray or greenish-grey, slightly transparent, and sometimes has a silvery sheen. The lower part of body is white, and a wide horizontal band in the center of the body extending to the caudal fin base. The height of this band is about same as the height of one scale, and the lower part of the band is dark blue and the upper part is silvery white or very light yellow-greenish brown. Posterior margin of scales with bluish gray. Small dark or black spots are normally scattered along the lower part of the flanks.
They grow to a maximum standard length of around 7 centimetres. Atherion elymus is a species found in shallow water and is associated with reefs, large aggregations can be found in tidal pools, along rocky coastlines and along the edges of reefs. Spawn in June to September. It lays large eggs which adhere to the substrate by a sticky filament. Feed on zooplankton.
