분포; 동대서양: 아이슬란드에서 남아프리카에 이르는 대서양 사면, 태평양: 일본 남부, 뉴질랜드, 오스트렐리아 남부, 페루와 칠레에 분포한다.
일반개요; 주둥이가 길고 옆으로 납작하다. 주둥이 끝과 가슴지느러미 기부의 시작점 사이의 중간에 눈이 위치한다. 피부치는 작은 편이며 갈래진 잎사귀 모양이다. 체색은 회갈색이다. 60~1500m 깊은 수심 대륙붕 저면에 살며 큰 무리를 짓는다. 경골어류, 오징어, 새우를 주식한다. 난태생이다.

Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Iceland along Atlantic slope to South Africa. Western and Eastern Pacific: southern Japan, Australia, New Zealand, southern Chile to northern Peru.
General: Snout long and depressed. Eye in middle between snout tip and origin of pectoral fin. Dermal denticles relatively small, forked leaf-shape. Brownish dark grey in color. Inhabit outer continental shelves and slopes, on or near the bottom, sometimes well above it. Often in large schools. Feed on bony fish, squid and shrimp. Ovoviviparous.
