분포; 남해(부산), 일본 북부의 태평양 연안, 오호츠크 해 남부에 분포.
일반개요; 몸이 길다. 눈이 크고 머리 위에 붙었다. 머리와 몸이 좌우로 심하게 납작하며 머리 아래쪽에는 턱 융기선이 없다. 주둥이 길이가 눈 지름 보다 조금 짧다. 아가미 구멍이 크며 아가미 구멍의 맨 아래는 가슴지느러미의 맨 아래 위치까지 내려와 있다. 몸은 비늘이 덮고 있다.  등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 기저부가 길며 꼬리지느러미와 연결되어 있다. 꼬리지느러미 끝이 뾰족하게 끝난다. 구개골(palatine;입천장부를 지지하는 7개의 뼈 중 하나로 가장 앞쪽에 위치)에 이빨이 있다. 눈 아래쪽, 볼, 턱, 머리의 위 뒤쪽에 작은 구멍이 있고 몸색은 연한 갈색 바탕이며 체측 전체에 걸쳐 약 14개의 H자형 무늬가 있다. 눈 뒤에 옆으로 긴 어두운 무늬가 있다. 연안의 모래 개펄 지역에 서식한다.

Distribution; Northwest Pacific/Southeast Korea, Pacific coast of northern Japan, and the southern Sea of Okhotsk.
General; Elongate body, whole body strongly compressed vertically. Without ridgeline of jaws.     Eyes are big and attached on dorsal part of head. The snout length is slightly shorter than the eye diameter. Gill opening is large and continuous to lower pectoral fin base. Body covered with scales. Dorsal and anal fins long and continuous with caudal fin. Caudal fin acuminates at the end. Palatine and vomerine teeth present, Body color with pale brown, and with about 14 markings resemble “H” character on side. A dark streak behind eye. Inhabits sand and mud bottoms.
