Family Blenniidae |

Family Blenniidae(Combtooth blennies) 58 genera 400 species worldwide, 7 genera 9 species in Korea. Distribute in Indian, Atlantic and Pacific. Chiefly tropical and subtropical marine. Rare in fresh- and brackish water. Combtooth blennies are active and often highly colourful, making them popular in the aquarium hobby. Usually blunt head. Typically elongate with long dorsal and anal fins. With small, slender pelvic fins(which are absent in only two species) are situated before their enlarged pectoral fins. Tail fins are rounded. Eyes are large. Eyes often positioned high on the head and usually with supraorbital cirri; cirri also often present near the nape, usually on the anterior nostril, variously on the posterior nostril. Adult males often with fleshy rugosities on the anal-fin spines. Scaleless body. Lateral line on the body mostly reduced or even absent. Premaxillae not protractile. No teeth in palatines. Teeth in jaws comblike, fixed or movable (canine teeth occasionally present). Swim bladder usually absent in adults, except in Phenablennius, Omox, and most Nemophini. Maximum length about 54 cm(hairtail blenny/Xiphasia setifer), most smaller than 15 cm. Mostly bottom dwelling species feeding on a mixed diet of algae and benthic invertebrates; some are planktivores. Males attract gravid females to lay their eggs in a small hole or crevice, or underneath empty bivalve shells. Eggs are demersal and adhesive, and are attached to the substrate via a filamentous, adhesive pad or pedestal. The eggs are then guarded by the male or by both parents. Larvae are planktonic, often found in shallow, coastal waters. Most occurring in shallow coastal marine waters, in rocky intertidal areas, coral reefs, mangroves, oyster beds, even empty shells, and in the lower reaches of most rivers. Some combtooth blennies are capable of leaving the water for short periods during low tide, aided by their large pectoral fins which act as "feet". Some combtooth blennies form small groups, while others are solitary and territorial. They may be either diurnal or nocturnal, depending on the species. One exceptional group of combtooth blennies deserves special mention: the so-called sabre-toothed blennies of the genera Aspidontus, Meiacanthus, Petroscirtes, Plagiotremus, and Xiphasia. These blennies have fang-like teeth with venom glands at their bases(not all species have venom glands). Species of the genera Aspidontus and Plagiotremus (such as the false cleanerfish) are noted for their cunning mimicry of cleaner wrasses: by imitating the latter's colour, form, and behaviour, the blennies are able to trick other fish (or even divers) into letting down their guard, long enough for the blennies to nip a quick mouthful of skin or scale. Etymology/Greek, blennos = similar to mucus; also a kind of fish applied to a species of ray. blennos = mucus. |
