양동미리과(Family Pinguipedidae; Sandperches; 샌드퍼치)
세계에 7속 83종, 한국에 1속 6종이 알려져 있다. 한국의 제주도와 남해, 일본 남부, 남중국해, 뉴질랜드, 하와이 칠레에 이르기까지 인도-태평양에 분포하며 아프리카와 남미 대륙 대서양 쪽에도 분포한다. 배지느러미 기부는 가슴지느러미 아래 또는 그 앞에 위치한다. 꼬리지느러미 뒤는 절단형이거나 안으로 깊이 패인 형이며 13-15개의 기조(Branched rays)로 이루어져있다. 등지느러미는 4-5개의 극조와 19-26개의 연조로 구성되어있다. 얕은 수심 모래나 작은 돌 바닥에 산다. 몸 앞쪽은 원통형이며  뒤로 가면서 끝 부분에서 좌우로 납작하다. 눈은 머리의 꼭대기 쪽에 있다. 간격이 큰 두 개의 배지느러미를 바닥에 대고 앞쪽 몸을 올린 채 바닥에 엎드려 시간을 보낸다. 모두 암컷으로 태어났다가 이들 중에서 수컷이 나오는 자성선숙 암수한몸(雌性先熟 雌雄同體, Protogynous hermaphrodites) 생태를 가졌다. 색상과 무늬들의 변화가 다양하다. 텃새를 부리며 하렘 사회를 형성한다. 알은 수 공간에 살포하는 방식으로 산란한다. 바닥에 사는 작은 무척추동물과 물고기를 잡아먹는다.

Family Pinguipedidae(Sandperches)
7 genera 83 species worldwide, 1 genus 6 species in Koera. Distributes in Indo-Pacific; southern Korea, southern Japan, Taiwan, South China Sea, as far down to New Zealand, Atlantic side of South America and Africa. Pelvic fin insertion below or before pectoral base. Truncate to deeply lunate caudal fin. Branched rays in caudal fin 13-15. Dorsal fin with 4-5 spines and 19-26 soft rays. Typically live on sand or rubble substrates in shallow seas. The anterior end of the fish is cylindrical and the posterior end partially flattened. The eyes are on the top of the head and the fish lie on the seabed, propped up by their widely separated pelvic fins. Protogynous hermaphrodites; starting their adult lives as females and later becoming males, often with significantly different colourings and markings. Territorial and haremic; pelagic spawners. Benthic carnivores of small invertebrates and fishes.
