분포; 북태평양: 한국의 동해와 남해, 일본까지의 동해 전 해안, 일본, 사할린, 쿠릴열도, 베링 해에 분포.
일반개요; 두 눈은 머리의 오른쪽에 몰려 있다. 몸은 긴 타원형이다. 주둥이가 짧고 입이 작다. 무안측에 큰 점액공들이 있고 여기서 분비되는 점액 때문에 몸 표면이 미끄럽다. 안구 피부에 비늘은 없다. 측선은 몸의 중앙부에 있고 가슴지느러미 부분에서 매우 낮게 위로 올라가 있다. 지느러미들의 가장자리가 검다. 무안측은 회백색이다. 수심 8~1600m의 해역에 광범위하게 서식하며 여름에 연안으로 나와 산란한다. 작은 조개, 새우 등 저서동물을 먹는다.

Distribution: Eastern and southern Korea, entire East Sea between Korean Peninsula and Japan, Sakhalin, Kuril Islands, Bering Sea.
General: Eyes on right side of the head. Body elongated. Short snout with small mouth. Blind side of head with large mucous cavities, body surface very slippery with the mucous. Upper surfaces of eyeballs naked. All fins with black margin. Lateral line almost straight. Eyeless side whitish grey. Inhabits bottoms from 8~1600m depth. Spawn in summer. Feeds on small clams, shrimps and other bottom-living animals.
