Distribution; Western Pacific/off south east coasts, south sea, including the Jeju Island of Korea, south of central Japan, Philippines, Australia, including the Arafura Sea. General; Armored cusk(Hoplobrotula armata) is called “Red catfish” in Korean, it is a species not related to actual catfish, and also called “Namax/나막스” as a dialect, which is said to have come from Japanese. The body is rather elongate and flat laterally, and tapering toward the pointed tail. Tip of snout square. The rear end of the upper jaw goes beyond the eyes. The eyes are almost as large as the length of snout. A spine on snout. The lips are thick and the jaws are lined with coarse villi-shaped small teeth. Scales absent on posterior head, 3 sharp spines on preopercle and 1 strong opercular spine. 5-6 developed rakers on anterior gill arch. Dorsal and anal fins are connected to the caudal fin. Characterized by pelvic fins inserted just below eye. Pelvic fin rays filamentous, lack membranes and not extending beyond operculum. No barbels on snout.
Body reddish-brown dorsally, small blotches form rows. The sides and belly are grayish-silver-white and glossy. There are no distinct marks on dorsal and anal fins in adult fish, light brown anteriorly and blackish posteriorly. Juveniles have several black, vertical bars on body, continuing onto the dorsal and anal fins as blotches, these marks of juveniles seem to disperse and fade with growth.
Found on the continental shelf and its slopes and lives mainly in the deep sea with a depth of 100 to 140 m, and can be found at a depth of 200 to 350 m. The large migration is not known, but it is believed to move a short-distance migration depending on the season for reasons such as feeding and breeding. There is a southward migration in summer and a northward migration between autumn and winter. It is oviparous, and the eggs are oval and float in a gelatinous mass. The prey they eat changes as they grow, and they mainly eat benthic organisms before they reach about 30cm in length, and when they grow older they start eating swimmers. It grows to around 13 cm after one year, 29 cm at 3 years, and 58 cm at 10 years.
It is a common species in the distribution area. Most are caught by low-rise trawling. It has a high commercial value due to its white flesh and good taste. It is also considered as a nutritional supplement due to its high content of vitamin E and protein. Utilize as sashimi or boil stew and dried fish. This dried fish is sometimes used as a side dish with alcohol called “Namax” in bars.
