분포; 서북태평양/한국 남부와 제주도, 일본 남부, 대만, 동중국해에 분포. 
일반개요; 해수어임. 다른 영명으로 코발트 실버사이드(Cobalt Silverside)라고 하며 한국식으로 말하자면 “코발트 은줄멸”이다. 체형은 가늘고 길며, 두부의 횡단면은 타원형이나 아가미 뒤쪽은 심하게 측편되어 있다. 입은 머리의 앞 끝에 위치하며 동공과 수평선상에 있다. 상악과 하악의 길이는 동일하며 상악 후단은 눈의 앞 가장자리에 이른다. 눈이 매우 크며 주둥이 길이와 비슷하다. 상악에 작은 이빨이 있다. 전상악골, 서골 및 구개골에 작은 이빨이 있다. 안경 상단부에 작은 가시들이 없으며 매끈하다. 두부의 뺨 부분을 제외한 체측면에 둥근비늘이 덮여 있다. 안경 후하단부의 전새개부 외연은 홈이 없이 매끈하다. 복부에 비늘능선(keel)이 없이 둥글다. 

제1등지느러미와 제2등지느러미는 거리가 충분히 떨어져 명확하게 분리되어 있다. 제1등지느러미의 기점은 몸통 부분 중앙에 있으며 항문 위치와 동일하다. 뒷지느러미 기저 시점은 제2등지느러미 기저 시점보다 약간 전방에서 시작한다. 배지느러미는 가슴지느러미 뒤끝에서 시작한다. 가슴지느러미는 몸의 중심선보다 위쪽에 있다. 항문은 배지느러미 후단 보다 약간 뒤쪽에 그리고 제1등지느러미 기점 아래에 위치한다. 꼬리지느러미 뒤 가장자리는 안쪽으로 깊게 패었다. 측선은 없고 종렬(수평)비늘 수는 43~47개이다. 

영명에 코발트 실버사이드(Cobalt Silverside)라는 이름이 있듯이 살아있을 때 코발트 빛 청색이 많은 부분을 차지하며 등쪽은 반투명하다. 등쪽은 연회청색이며, 등의 맨 위 가장자리 암청색을 띤다. 아가미 후연부터 꼬리지느러미 기부까지 몸 중앙에는 너비가 넓은 은청색 세로줄(=수평줄)이 있다. 모든 지느러미는 무색투명하지만 가슴지느러미와 꼬리지느러미는 어둡다. 연안 얕은 곳의 암초 주변 표층에서 집단으로 유영 생활을 하는 소형 어류이다. 동물성 플랑크톤을 먹는다. 맛이 좋지 않아 식용보다는 동물사료로 주로 사용하며, 산란 시기는 6-8월이다.

Distribution; Northwest Pacific/southern Korea including Jeju Island, southern Japan, Taiwan and East China Sea.
General; Marine fish. Also called as Cobalt Silverside. Body is long and thin, the cross section of the head is oval, but the back of the gill is severely compressed. Mouth is located at the fore tip of the head and is on the horizontal line of the pupil. Length of the upper and lower jaw is same, and the posterior end of the upper jaw reaches anterior margin of the eye. The eyes are very large and are similar in length to the snout. Small teeth on upper jaw, anterior maxilla, vomer and palatine bones. Upper part of eye smooth without a small spine. Body covered with round scales except for the cheek part of the head. The outer edge of preopercle below the eye is smooth without grooves. The abdomen is smooth without any keel. 

The first and second dorsal fins are clearly separated. The origin of the first dorsal fin is in the middle of the body which is the same position of anus. Anal fin starts slightly anterior to origin of the second dorsal fin. Pelvic fin starts at the back end of the pectoral fin. The pectoral fin is located above the mid line of the body side. The anus is located slightly behind the posterior end of the pelvic fin and below the origin of the first dorsal fin. The margin of the caudal fin deeply cut inward. Lateral line absent and the number of horizontal row scales is 43-47. 

As its other English name “Cobalt Silverside” suggests, when alive, its overall color is dominated by cobalt blue hue. The dorsal part is translucent light gray-blue, and the top edge of the back is dark blue. A thick silver-blue horizontal band along midline of body from the posterior edge of the gill to the base of the caudal fin. All fins are colorless and transparent, but the pectoral and caudal fins are dark. It is a small fish that swims in groups on the surface layer around reefs in shallow coastal areas. Feed on zooplankton. Due to its poor taste, it is mainly used as animal food rather than edible, and spawning season is from June to August.
