Distribution; Northwest Pacific/All around coasts of Korean peninsula, Yellow Sea, Pohai Sea, Japan Sea, and the Pacific coast of Japan, extending north to Sakhalin and to Preobrazheniye Bight and Vladivostok in the Gulf of Peter the Great. Recorded from the lower part of the Yangtze River in China. Occurrence of this species south to the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan needs verification.
General; The national Korean name is "Hak-gong-chi", but "Hak-ggong-chi" is also recognized as a standard language. The Korean name equivalent to "crane halfbeak" and refers to the fact that its mouth is long like a crane's beak. In Korea, the Japanese name Sayori (サヨリ) is often used.

Body elongated, cylindrical and slightly compressed, cross section oval shape. Snout long, lower jaw extended far ahead of snout like a needle. Lower jaw shorter than head length(whereas longer than head length in Hyporhamphus intermedius). With single dorsal fin. Dorsal and anal fins placed close to caudal fin. Caudal fin emarginated but slightly forked. Whole body covered with scales, scales extend onto anterior upper jaw. Scales are deciduous.

Pale bluish green dorsally, silvery white ventrally with pale bluish tint. A metallic silvery stripe along mid body. Fins almost transparent without blotches. Caudal fin slightly dark. Anterior part of lower jaw red in color(whereas the Hyporhamphus intermedius blackish).

Inhabit shoals off the coast, bays, estuarine waters, schools in surface water, move into middle reaches of rivers. Spend winter in sea water, go upstream from April to July for spawning. The eggs have sticky filaments that allow them to cling to aquatic weeds and objects. When startled, they jump out above surface to escape. They spend most of their time on the surface, feeding on zooplankton and small crustaceans, also algae.
