분포; 아시아/한국 고유종. 강릉 남대천과 그 이북의 동해로 유입하는 하천에 분포.
일반개요; 머리와 몸은 가늘고 길며 옆으로 약간 납작(측편)하다. 꼬리자루는 몸의 다른 곳보다 더 가늘고 납작하다. 머리도 옆으로 납작하다. 주둥이는 길게 돌출되어 끝이 뾰족하며 입은 작고 주둥이 아래에 있으며 주변에 3쌍의 입수염이 있다. 눈은 작고 머리 중앙의 위쪽 지점에 있으며 그 아래에는 작고 끝이 2개로 갈라진 안하극(眼下棘)이라 부르는 가시가 있다. 수컷의 가슴지느러미 기부에는 밥주걱모양의 골질반이 있다. 등의 가운데 지점에는 삼각형 모양의 등지느러미가 있다. 배지느러미는 등지느러미보다 약간 뒤쪽에서 시작되고 꼬리 끝과 배지느러미 중간 지점에는 뒷지느러미가 있으며 꼬리지느러미는 갈라지지 않았고 가장자리가 거의 직선이다. 옆줄은 불완전하며 가슴지느러미가 시작하는 부분을 넘지 못한다.

몸 전체는 연한 황갈색이며 머리의 옆면에는 주둥이 끝에서 눈에 이르는 암갈색 줄무늬가 있고 암색의 작은 반점이 흩어져 있다. 등에는 13~14 개 정도의 진한 갈색의 구름 무늬가 일정한 간격으로 배열되어 있고 몸 옆구리에는 둥글거나 역삼각형 내지 V자 형의 큰 반점 10~12개가 일정한 간격으로 놓여 있다. 맨 위의 등 무늬와 옆구리 줄무늬 사이에는 불규칙하고 작은 반문들의 열이 1줄 내지 2줄 끼어있다. 등지느러미와 꼬리지느러미에는 가는 줄무늬가 3~4개 있으며 다른 지느러미들은 무늬가 없고 투명하다. 꼬리지느러미가 시작되는 부분의 위쪽에는 1개의 작은 검은색 점이 있다.

하천 중•하류 물이 맑은 곳의 자갈과 모래 바닥에 서식하며 위협을 느끼면 자갈이나 모래 속으로 파고 들어간다. 주로 물에 사는 곤충을 잡아먹는다. 산란기는 6~8월로 추정된다. 수컷이 암컷의 몸을 휘감아 조여 알을 낳게 하고 수정한다. 주로 모래 속에서 지내다가 먹이를 먹을 때 위로 나온다.

한국에서는 강릉 남대천과 그 이북의 동해로 유입하는 하천에서 볼 수 있으며 한국에서만 분포하는 한국고유종이다. 중국과 시베리아 등지에 분포하는 Cobitis melanoleuca(Nichols, 1925)와 동일종으로 알려져 있다가 체측 반문과 골질반 등의 형태적 특징이 다른 것으로 판명되어 1999년에 종명이 변경되었다.

Distribution; Asia/endemic to Korea. Streams flow to east coasts north of Nam-dae-cheon stream in Gang-Reung City. 
General; Body and head slender, laterally long and slightly compressed, Peduncle narrower than the body. Snout protruded and the tip pointed. Mouth small, placed below snout and with 3 pairs of barbels. Eye small and located at upper side of head center. A branched erectile spine below the eye. Pectoral fin of male with lamina circularis(small bony plate) at the base. Dorsal fin triangular in shape, placed at the middle of body. Pelvic fin begins slightly behind of dorsal fin origin. Anal fin placed at the middle between pelvic fin and posterior tip of caudal fin. Margin of caudal fin truncated. Lateral line incomplete; not surpass the base of pectoral fin.

Ground color of body light brown. Head with scattered small blotches and a streak from snout to eye. 13~14 regularly spaced cloudy blotches on upper dorsal side. Along the flank, 10~12 regularly spaced dark blotches rounded or inverted triangular(or V) in shape. 1~2 lines of small irregular blotches sandwiched between these two main stripes. 3~4 narrow bands on dorsal and caudal fins. A black blotch on upper side of caudal fin base.

Inhabit sand and gravel bottoms in clear water of mid and lower reaches. Hide under substrate most of the time, come out when feeding. Feed mainly on aquatic insects. Spawn in June to August. Male support egg laying female by twisting around and pressing the partner’s body; this behavior common in other congeners. Formerly classified as Cobitis melanoleuca(Nichols, 1925); got own species name in 1999.
