분포; 인도-태평양/페르시아만과 홍해에서부터 사모아 제도까지, 남으로는 로드하우 제도, 북으로는 타이완까지 분포.
일반개요; 색상은 매우 여러 가지로 나타난다. 몸의 위쪽은 흐린 황갈색이며 배쪽으로는 백색이다. 어두운 테두리 선을 가진 비늘들이 전체적으로 벌집 모양을 나타내며 몸 중심축에 더 어두운 색의 길쭉한 사각형 모양의 무늬들 몇 개가 같은 선상에 배열되어 있다. 꼬리지느러미의 기조 중 2개 내지 3개는 분지되지 않은 기조이고 14개 내지 15개는 분지 기조(갈라진 기조)이다. 몸의 비늘은 빗비늘이며 등지느러미 전 비늘 7-10개는 둥근비늘이다. 아가미뚜껑에 2개의 사선 방향 줄 무늬가 있다. 위턱의 뒷부분에 U자가 뒤집힌 모양의 점이 한 개 있다. 가슴지느러미에 작은 점들이 있다. 뒷지느러미, 배지느러미, 제2등지느러미 모양은 암수에 차이가 있다. 수컷의 성기 돌기는 뒷지느러미 가시 기조 옆까지 닿으며 검은 색을 띨 때가 있다. 암컷의 생식기 돌기는 끝이 절단형이며 뒷지느러미 기점 훨씬 전에서 끝난다. 외해 암초 1 - 25 m 수심의 산호 모래가 깔린 바닥에서 흔히 발견된다. 주로 홀로 지낸다.

Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/Persian Gulf and Red Sea to Samoa, south to Lord Howe Island, north to Taiwan.
General; Color highly variable, brownish on upper half, grading to white below; dark brown scale margins forming honeycomb pattern and midlateral row of double dark brown spots forming rectangular markings; segmented and non branching caudal rays 3(rarely 2), branching 14(rarely 15). Predorsal cycloid scales 7-10, trunk ctenoid. Few with no black spots on nape. Isthmus narrow, scaled forward to vertical at posterior part of preoperculum. 2 diagonal, dusky lines on operculum; an inverted U-shaped spot prominent at the distal end of upper jaw. Pectoral fin with small dusky spots; 2 longitudinal lines on pectoral base spreading onto it fin rays. Sexual dimorphism exhibited in anal, pelvic and 2nd dorsal fin. A common species that inhabits areas of coralline sand of clear lagoon and seaward reefs. Depth range 1-25m. Found singly. Genital papilla of male sometimes darkly pigmented and reaching to side of anal spine. Female genital papilla truncate, ending well before origin of anal fin.
