분포; 한국의 서해와 남해, 일본, 타이완, 중국에 분포한다.
일반개요; 농어와 매우 비슷하다. 아래턱이 돌출되었다. 농어는 25cm 미만에서 비늘 크기보다 작은 검은 점들이 남아 있다가 성어가 되면 없어지는데 반하여 점농어는 비늘보다 더 큰 흑색점들이 등쪽에 흩어져 있다. 1990년대 중반까지 농어와 같은 종으로 취급되었다. 연안에서 유영생활을 하며 어릴 적에는 기수나 담수에도 올라간다. 물고기와 갑각류를 먹는다. 양식되고 있다.

Distribution: western and southern coasts of Korean Peninsula, Japan, Taiwan, and China.
General: Compressed body, lower jaw longer than upper jaw. Very similar to Lateolabrax japonicus, until the mid Nineties, above two species were known as same species. Body with black blotches, each size usually larger than scale. Snout slightly shorter than L. japonicus. Inhabits coastal shallow waters, brackish and fresh waters. Feeds on small fishes and crustaceans. Cultured species.
