Distribution; Northwest Pacific/South Sea of Korea including Jeju Island, southern Japan, Taiwan, East China Sea, Philippines, Vietnam(data source/OpenMapTiles, GBIF. 2022)
General; The body is long, sub-cylindrical, slightly flattened laterally, gradually narrowing backwards, and the dorsal and ventral margins are sloping. Body depth highest at the base of the pelvic fin. Caudal peduncle medium length. The head is large, quadrangular, slightly flattened. The head is protected by a bony plate.

The preorbital bone forms flat rostrum, which corresponds to front part of the snout, has the function of plowing the soil, with 1 sharp long spine on the outside and several short spines on the inside. Front margin of rostrum concave in the center. Dorsal edge of the snout is steep, intersecting with the upper jaw at 65 degrees, the snout length is shorter than the eye diameter. When seen above, snout is wide, obviously larger than the eye diameter. There are no original snout spines other than the rostrum spines.

Eyes large, round, upper side of eyeball almost reaching the dorsal edge of the head. The interocular septum is wide and concave, with a transverse groove at the posterior edge. The distance between the eyes is narrower than the distance between the protrusions at both ends of the snout. Two nostrils, close to each other, located below the eyes, the anterior nostril small and round, the posterior nostril slightly larger and slit-shaped, only the anterior nostril has a short cortical tube.

The mouth is rather large, located at bottom of head, and the cleft is oblique. The upper jaw is more protruding than the lower jaw, the upper jaw is not exposed. Rear end of upper jaw does not extend below the front edge of the eye. Lips are thin. The upper and lower jaws have villiform teeth, the vomer teeth are sparse, and the palatine bones are toothless. Tongue round and thick, not free. The gill opening is wide, and there is a slit behind the fourth branchial arch. Gill cover membrane separated, not connected with isthmus, front end extends below posterior nostril. False gills well developed.

Preopercle spineless. Gill cover with 2 spines. Subopercle and interopercle without spines. The brachial spine is broad and pointed, reaching below the sixth spine of the dorsal fin. The base of the dorsal fin has 22-23 spinous plates; the front plate is wider and the spines are relatively blunt; the rear plate is narrower and the spines are sharper. The scales are medium and large, with ctenoid scales, round scales on the abdomen, arranged in tiles. Chest, head and each fins absent in scale. The lateral line is obliquely straight, on the upper side, extending to the base of the caudal fin.

2 dorsal fins, the distance between them is slightly larger than 1/2 of the eye diameter, the starting point of the first dorsal fin is located above the rear edge of the operculum, the base is shorter, the base of the second dorsal fin is about 1.7 times as long as the first dorsal fin, and the rear end of the fin rays does not reach the caudal fin base, the first to third spines have fine serrations on the leading edge, the second to third spines are the longest. The 1st dorsal fin consists only of spines and the first ray of the 2nd dorsal fin also spine ray. The starting point of anal fin is located below the front end of the second dorsal fin, the length of the base is slightly shorter than the base of the second dorsal fin, the rear end of the fin rays does not reach the base of the caudal fin, and the length of the fin rays is slightly shorter than that of the dorsal fin.

The pectoral fin is quite long, reaching above the fifth to sixth anal fin rays. Lower part of the pectoral fin has 3 finger-like free fin rays, which are used to crawl on the bottom of the water and dig the soil for food, the first free fin ray is the longest, extending to posterior end of pelvic fin; second and third free fin rays successively shorter. Upper part of the pectoral fin is wing-shaped, which can be spread out to glide in the water. The pelvic fin is quite long, with chest position, almost reaching the anus, the spine is about 0.7 times as long as the first fin ray, the second to third fin rays are the longest. The posterior edge of the caudal fin is concave, and the length of the fin is about equal to the height of the body.

Body cavity medium-large; peritoneum white. The stomach is cystic with thick walls. Intestine shorter than body length, coiled twice. The pyloric cecum is finger-like. The swim bladder is large, thick-walled, and oval.

The body color is yellowish red and the belly is white. The inner surface of pectoral fin is dark blue. The dorsal, anal, pelvic and caudal fins are light red. The rays of the pectoral fin is dark red and the membranes are black. According to some information, there are no patterns on the body. However, there is no image of this species in its fresh state, so it is not known what patterns it has on its body.

Warm temperate marine fish. Small and medium-sized. Habitat depth is 40~440m. It is found on sandy or fine pebbled sandy bottoms. They live in groups and have short-distance migratory habits. Feeds on invertebrates. Oviparous, floating eggs. It is by-caught by low-level trawlers. The quantity is small and the economic value is small.
