Distribution; Asia/upper reach of Yalu river, Duman river and Nam-dae-cheon stream of Korea, China, and Amur river basin including Heilong Jiang, Liao-ho, Yellow River, and Sakhalin. General; The Korean name “ya-rae” is derived from Mongolian language. Body elongated and compressed laterally. Outline of dorso-head is straight from the tip of snout to posterior head. Body deepest at ahead of dorsal fin. Outline contour of abdomen asymmetrical to dorsal outline; horizontally straight from pectoral fin to anus, base line of anal fin straight to upward and then the ventral contour run straight to caudal fin base. Snout tip pointed. Eye large. Both lips smooth. Lateral line complete, curved down at anterior part. Scales large on the body, small at the breast and abdomen. Base line of dorsal fin short. Caudal fin deeply emarginated. Overall body color silvery white, with pale brown dorsally. All fins with red hue, margins of dorsal and caudal blackish. In spirits; blackish brown dorsally, scales of body show brownish grey hue. Inhabits mid to upper reaches of streams where water flow fast. Feed on aquatic insect larvae and flying terrestrial insects.
