분포; 아시아/한국 고유종으로 섬진강과 낙동강에 분포한다. 분포 범위가 협소하다.
일반개요; 몸길이 10∼12cm이다. 몸은 원통 모양으로 가늘고 길며 옆으로 조금 납작하다. 꼬리자루는 옆으로 납작하다. 눈은 머리의 등 쪽에 있다. 주둥이는 끝이 둔한 원뿔 모양으로 위쪽이 조금 오목하며, 입은 밑에서 보면 반원형이다. 아래턱이 위턱보다 짧다. 입술에는 피질돌기(皮質突起)가 발달했으며, 윗입술의 피질돌기는 가운데에 있는 것들이 비교적 크고 입구석으로 갈수록 작아져서 결국 포도송이처럼 된다. 입 구석에 달린 한 쌍의 입수염은 가늘고 눈의 지름과 거의 같은 길이이다.

아가미구멍은 비교적 넓다. 비늘은 기와 지붕처럼 덮여 있다. 머리와 가슴에 비늘이 없다. 등지느러미는 배지느러미보다 앞에서 시작되고 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미의 가장자리가 안으로 조금 굽는다. 가슴지느러미는 배 쪽에 달려 있고 옆으로 퍼진다. 꼬리지느러미는 2개로 갈라지고, 위아래 조각의 크기가 같으며 끝이 뾰족하다. 측선(옆줄)은 완전하고 몸 양 옆의 가운데 부분을 거의 직선으로 달리지만 등지느러미보다 앞 쪽 전반부에서는 약간 배 쪽으로 굽는다.

몸 빛깔은 등 쪽이 청갈색, 옆구리에서 배 쪽에 이르러 은백색이다. 윤곽이 뚜렷하지 않은 갈색 반점이 5~13개가 몸 길이에 걸쳐 배열되어 있다. 측선 비늘을 따라 진한 갈색의 깨알 같은 작은 점들이 박혀있다. 등 쪽에 큰 암갈색 점들이 등 길이를 따라 배열되어 있는데 등지느러미 바로 아래와 뒤쪽으로 있는 4개는 분명하게 보인다. 등지느러미 앞의 등 쪽에도 이와 같은 무늬가 있으나 분명하지가 않다. 꼬리지느러미와 등지느러미에는 작은 점이 배열되어 줄무늬 4~5줄을 이루는 것처럼 보인다. 살아 있을 때 몸 옆 가운데에는 폭이 넓은 녹청색 세로줄이 있다. 뒷지느러미는 연한 색이고 가슴지느러미의 겨드랑이와 입술의 바깥쪽은 오렌지색을 나타내는 개체들도 있다.

하천 상류와 중류의 물살이 다소 빠르고 물이 맑은 모래 바닥이나 자갈이 깔린 얕은 시냇물에서 산다. 몇 마리가 무리를 지어 바닥 근처에서 헤엄친다. 먹이는 미생물이지만 갑각류, 수생곤충, 규조류(硅藻類) 등도 먹는다. 식용으로도 쓰이지만 큰 인기는 없다. 2012년 5월 31일 멸종위기 야생생물 2급으로 지정되었으며, 2018년 멸종위기 야생생물 1급으로 격상하였다.

Distribution; Asia/endemic to Korea. Found in Seom-jin and Nak-dong rivers. Distributed in limited small area.
General; Body almost cylindrical and slightly compressed, elongated, with shallow body depth, peduncle compressed. Eye placed dorso-head. Snout bluntly conic shape with little indentation on dorsal side. Mouth below snout, half moon shape when seen from below. Lower jaw shorter than upper jaw. Lips with well developed cortical processes, the processes on central area of upper lip larger than the ones at the mouth corners, this makes a look like a bunch of grapes. A pair of barbels at the corner of mouth, its’ length equivalent to eye diameter.

With relatively large gill opening. Scales cover the body like roof tile system. Scales absent on head and breast. Origin of dorsal fin placed ahead of pelvic fin. Margins of dorsal and anal fins slightly incurved. Pectoral fin placed close to abdomen and spread out horizontally. Caudal fin deeply caved in and both lobes same in size and with pointed tips. Lateral line complete and slightly curved down in the anterior portion.

Body color with bluish brown dorsally and silvery ventrally. 5~13 indistinct blotches on body side just above the lateral line. With tiny blackish dots like a grain of sesame on each scales of lateral line. With dark blotches on dorsal area; the 4 blotches beneath and behind dorsal fin relatively distinct and rest ones before dorsal fin obscure. Several vertical rows of black dots on caudal and dorsal fins. Anal fin with pale creamy color. Some specimen with orange shade on armpit of pectoral fin and outer rim of lips.

Inhabit sand and gravel bottoms of mid and upper reaches of clear swift streams. Schooling in small groups. Feed on microorganism, aquatic insects. crustaceans, and diatoms. Used for food but not popular. Designated to first class endangered species in 2018 by Korean government.
