분포; 북태평양/한국은 강원도와 북한의 동해로 유입되는 하천과 동해, 일본 홋카이도, 오호츠크해, 베링해 등의 북태평양 해역에 분포한다.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 매우 크고 두텁다. 머리는 등쪽에서 보면 넓고 위아래로 납작하다. 몸은 원통형이고 뒤쪽으로 갈수록 옆으로 납작하다. 후두부에는 2쌍의 짧은 촉수(피질돌기)가 나 있다. 눈은 크며 등쪽으로 치우쳐 있고, 두 눈 사이는 넓고 평탄하다. 주둥이는 매우 크며 뾰족하다. 아래턱이 위턱보다 다소 짧으며 위턱의 뒤끝은 눈의 뒤 가장자리에 달하거나 조금 지나친다. 구개골에는 이가 없으나 서골에는 이가 있다. 가슴지느러미는 매우 길어 뒤끝이 제2등지느러미 기부를 지나거나 뒷지느러미 기부에 달한다. 전새개골에는 3개의 날카로운 가시가 있으며 가장 위쪽의 것이 가장 길며 날카롭다. 등지느러미는 2개로 서로 가까이 위치하며, 꼬리지느러미는 수직형에 가까운 둥근형이다. 몸에 비늘이 없다. 측선(옆줄)은 등의 윤곽선과 평행한다. 

몸 전체가 검은색을 띠지만 몸의 등쪽과 측면은 녹색빛을 띤 갈색 바탕에 검은 갈색의 폭이 넓은 4개의 짙은 가로띠가 나타나며 협부와 항문간의 복면은 밝은 황색을 띤다. 복측면에 안경보다 약간 큰 크기의 밝은 황색 원형 무늬가 있다 

비교적 얕은 수심의 해조 밭, 암초지역에서 서식하는 저서성 어류이다. 생태에 대하여 자세히 알려진 내용은 없으나 바다의 연안에 살면서 가끔 강하류와 연안의 호수로 올라가기도 한다. 작은 물고기나 갑각류 등을 잡아먹는다. 산란기는 3~4월이며 얕은 바다와 내만에 들어와 바위에 점착란을 낳는다.. 초여름이 되면 조간대에서 치어떼를 볼 수 있다.

Distribution; North Pacific/East coasts and streams flow to east sea in north of central Korean peninsula, Japan, Aleutian Is, Kamchatka to Sea of Okhotsk.
General; The body and head very large and thick. The head is wide and depressed when viewed from above. The body almost cylindrical and compressed as it goes back. With 2 pairs of short tentacles(cortical processes) in occipital region. The eyes are large and skewed toward dorso-head, and the space between the two eyes is wide and flat. The snout is very large and pointed. The lower jaw is somewhat shorter than the upper jaw, and the rear end of the upper jaw reaches or slightly exceeds the rear edge of the eye. There are no teeth in the palatine bone, but there are teeth in the vomer. The pectoral fin is very long and the posterior end passes the base of the second dorsal fin or reaches the base of anal fin. There are 3 sharp spines on the preopercle, and the top one is the longest and sharpest.  Has two dorsal fins that located close to each other. The margin of caudal fin truncated and slightly rounded. Absent in scales. The lateral line is parallel to the contour of the back.

The whole body with blackish hue, but the dorsal and side surfaces of the body are greenish-brown, and with four large dark black vertical bands. Surface between the isthmus and anus is bright yellow. With liht yellow round blotches slightly larger than eye diameter at the ventral side.

It is a benthic fish that inhabits relatively shallow seaweed fields and reef areas in the littoral zone.  There is no known detailed information about the ecology, sometimes goes up to rivers and lakes close to the coast. Feed on small fish and crustaceans. The spawning season is from March to April, enters the shallow sea and inner bay and lays sticky eggs on the rocks. In early summer, fry can be seen in the intertidal zone.
