분포; 인도양/홍해, 남아프리카에서부터 인도양 서부와 인도네시아 남서부, 발리 섬까지 분포하며 오만과, 페르시아 만, 인도에는 없다.
일반개요; 이 종은 과거에 제주표문쥐치(Orangespine unicornfish; Naso lituratus)와 동일 종으로 알려져 있었고 인도양과 태평양에 양쪽에 분포하는 종으로 설명되어 있었다. 그러나 외관은 같아도 인도양 개체군(Naso elegans)과 태평양 개체군(Naso lituratus)이 서로 다른 종으로 밝혀져 다시 정리되어 있다(출처/fishbase.org;2018년 현재). 한국 분포 종인 제주표문쥐치는 태평양 개체군이다. 현재 한국에 소개되어 있는 제주표문쥐치 데이터들은 업데이트 되지 않은 것들이다.

엘레간트 유니콘피시(Elegant unicornfish)는 다른 이름으로는 인도양 오렌지 스파인 유니콘피시(Indian orange-spine unicorn), 오렌지 스파인 유니콘피시(Orange-spine unicorn), 스무스 헤드 유니콘피시(Smoothheaded unicornfish)가 있다. 몸 바탕은 회색이며 주둥이가 검고 눈 위에 넓은 노란색 반문이 있다. 등지느러미는 노란 색이며 가장자리에 좁은 청색 테두리가 있고 아래 쪽에는 검은 줄이 깔려 있다. 뒷지느러미와 배지느러미는 어두운 황갈색이며 입술은 노란 색이다. 꼬리지느러미는 연한 노란 색이며 위와 아래 가장자리가 검으며 뒤 가장자리의 안쪽에 검은 띠 하나가 수직 방향으로 놓여있다. 꼬리지느러미 뒤는 안으로 휘어져 있고 수컷 성어는 위 아래 끝이 실처럼 연장되어 있다. 2개의 미병부 가시칼 판은 노란 색이다. 미병부 가시칼은 수컷이 암컷보다 길고 꼬리지느러미 위 아래의 필라멘트도 수컷 것이 훨씬 길다. 나이가 먹을수록 색상이 어두워진다.

외해 암초의 산호 밭, 바위 지대, 자갈 바닥에 살며 미세 조류보다는 큰 모자반 같은 해조류를 먹는다. 4년 자라면 전장이 360mm가 된다. 최대 수명이 17년이다. 제주표문쥐치(N. lituratus)보다 성장 속도가 훨씬 빠르다.

Distribution; Indian Ocean/Red Sea south to Durban, South Africa and east through the islands of the western Indian Ocean to southwestern Indonesia, at least to Bali. Not reported from the Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf, or India. Previously considered the Indian Ocean color variant of Naso lituratus.
General; Once regarded a wide-ranging Indo-Pacific species, the Pacific Ocean population is now recognized as a separate species, Naso lituratus. Naso elegans is widespread in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean as far east as Bali including all intervening island groups.

It is commonly known as the Elegant unicornfish, Indian orange-spine unicorn, Orange-spine unicorn, and Smoothheaded unicornfish. A grey unicornfish with a dark snout, a broad yellow bar above the eyes, a yellow dorsal fin with a narrow blue margin and a black submarginal band on the dorsal fin, dark brown anal and pelvic fins, the lips develop a yellow color, .a yellowish caudal fin with black upper and lower margins and a black submarginal band. Caudal fin emarginate with adult males having trailing filaments from each corner. Two yellow patches appear at the peduncle spines near the tail. The sexes are separate and there is evidence of sexual dimorphism in the caudal knives which are relatively larger and longer filaments in males. Darkens with maturity.

Found in areas of coral, rock, or rubble of lagoon and seaward reefs. Feed mainly on leafy brown algae(Sargassum and Dictyota). It achieves a maximum size of 360mm(TL) in four years. The maximum age recorded is 17 years. It is much faster growing than N. lituratus in many locations it was found.
