농어목 Order Perciformes(Perch-likes)
전 어종 수의 약 반을 농어목 어류가 차지한다. 세계적으로 농어목은 20개 아목, 160개 과, 약 1,539속, 약 10,033종으로 구성되어 있다. 100종 이상을 포함하고 있는 21개 과가 있는가 하면 단 1종씩만 갖고 있는 과도 23개 과가 된다. 약 2,040종은 담수어종이며 약 2,335종은 생애의 일부를 담수에서 보내는 종들이다(J.S. Nelson, 2006). ‘Nelson 2006’ 기준 이전에 정리된 국내 자료에 의하면 한국에는 84과, 260속 455종이 기록되어 있다(한국어류대도감, 2005, 김익수/최윤 외). 농어목에는 분류가 불안정한 종들이 많아서 가끔 분류의 변경이 발표된다.

한국명 농어과는 160개 과가 넘는 분류군(Order Perciformes)의 1개과에 불과하며 단 3종 밖에 안 되는 식구를 가지고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 Order Perciformes의 한국명이 “농어목”이라고 지어진 것은 이따금 혼란을 일으키는 요인이 된다. Perciformes는 횟대(perch) 모양(form)으로 생긴 물고기라는 뜻이지 ‘농어’란 뜻은 아니다. 옆으로 몸이 긴 물고기 부류를 말한다. 물론 나비고기나 도미류처럼 길죽하게 생기지 않은 물고기들이 농어목에 있는가 하면 동갈치목 어류처럼 농어목 물고기들보다 오히려 더 횟대 모양으로 긴 것들이 다른 목에도 많다. 

Order Perciformes(perch-likes)
About half of world fish species, as well as Korean fishes, is perciforms. Perciformes contains 20 suborders, 160 families, about 1,539 genera and about 10,033 species. About 20,040 species occur only in freshwater, and about 2,335 species occur in freshwater for at least part of their life history. Some 52 families have single genus, 23 have a single species, and 21 have 100 or more species(J.S. Nelson, 2006). In Korean waters there are 84 families, 260 genera and 455 species(Illustrated Book of Korean Fishes, 2005, Kim I.S., Choi Y., etc).

The classification of this order is unsettled and will certainly be subject to changes that will better reflect the taxonomic evolutionary history. Etymology of perciformes is Greek, perke=perch+Latin, forma=shape. However, there are many non-perch-like shapes in this order, and many perch-likes in other orders.
