분포; 아시아/원산지는 인도네시아와 말레이 반도이다.
일반개요; 쿨리미꾸라지는 열대산 미꾸라지다. 인도네시아와 말레이 반도가 원산지이다. 종전에는 속명이 아칸토프탈무스(Acanthophthalmus)였는데 가시가 난 눈이라는 뜻이다. 눈 아래에 안하극(안하극; suborbital spine)이 있어서 붙여진 이름인데 미꾸리과 어류들은 대부분 안하극이 있다.

쿨리미꾸라지는 체형은 가늘고 길며 뱀 모양이며 좌우로 약간 납작하다. 입 주변에 4쌍(?)의 입수염이 있다. 지느러미들은 아주 작다. 등지느러미는 몸의 중앙 뒤에서 시작되며 뒷지느러미는 이보다 훨씬 뒤에 위치해 있다. 눈에는 투명한 막이 덮여 있다. 10~15 개의 암갈색 내지 흑갈색의 수직 반문이 배열되어 있는데 모양들이 일정하지는 아니하다. 반점들 사이의 색상은 연어 분홍색 내지 노란색이며 배쪽은 연하다. 꼬리지느러미 시작 부분에 사각형의 큰 검은 반문이 있다. 아래 입술의 가운데에 작은 수염 돌기는 나지 않았다.

쿨리미꾸라지는 산란기가 아닌 평시에는 암수의 체형이 차이가 거의 없으나 자세히 관찰해보면 수컷의 등쪽이 더 근육질로 보이며 가슴지느러미도 더 크고 더 주걱 모양이며 색소를 띌 때가 자주 있다. 산란기에는 암컷이 더 크며 산란 직전에는 암컷 배 안에 든 녹색 빛의 알이 피부를 통해 들여다 보인다. 산란은 얕은 수심에 많은 개체들이 모여들어 집단적으로 한다. 한 마리가 수천 개의 알을 낳으며 알을 부유 식물의 뿌리 사이에 붙여 낳는다. 7 cm 크기에서 성어가 되며 10 cm까지 자란다. 수명은 약 14년이다. 

쿨리미꾸라지는 유속이 느린 강물과 산간 계곡 하천의 모래 바닥에서 산다. 부드러운 모래 바닥 속에 들어가 보내는 시간이 많다. 큰 무리를 짓지는 않지만 소수 무리로 군집해 사는 습성이 있다. 조심성이 많고 야행성이며 바닥에 붙어서 헤엄쳐 다니면서 먹이를 찾는다. 잡식성이어서 바닥에 있는 무엇이든 먹는다. 자연에서는 야간에 먹이를 먹지만 관상어 수조에서는 낮에 먹이를 먹게 습관을 고칠 수 있다.

쿨리미꾸라지는 열대어 관상어 시장에서 흔히 거래되는 종이다. 어항 안에서는 홀로 외로이 지내며 모래가 깔려있는 수조에서는 놀라면 모래 속으로 숨거나 수조 장식물 밑으로 숨는다. 판기오 속(genus Pangio)에는 쿨리와 외형이 비슷한 종들이 여럿 있으며 쿨리미꾸라지(kuhli loach)라는 같은 이름으로 거래된다. 모두 개인용 관상어 수조에 어울리며 관리 방법도 같다. 생명력이 강해서 오래 살며 다른 종들과도 충돌을 일으키지 않는다.

Distribution; Asia/originate from Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula.
General; They are loaches natively live in a tropical climate. They originate from Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula. Its older generic name 'Acanthophthalmus' comes from the meaning 'thorn' or 'prickle-eye', after a spine beneath each eye. Almost all cobitids have this organ and known as the name of ‘suborbital spines’.

The kuhli loach is an eel-shaped slender fish with slightly compressed sides, four pairs(?) of barbels around the mouth, and very small fins. The dorsal fin starts behind the middle of the body, and the anal fin well behind this. The eyes are covered with a transparent skin. The body has 10 to 15 dark brown to black vertical bars, usually irregular, and the gaps between them are salmon pink to yellow with a light underside. With a dark large quadrangular blotch occupying the proximal half of caudal fin; median lobe of lower lip not produced into a barbel.

When the fish is not actively breeding, distinctions between males and females are not readily apparent. However, close observation will reveal that males have a more muscular upper/dorsal cross-section and their pectoral fins tend to be larger, more paddle-shaped, and often have some pigment in them. When breeding, the females often become larger than the male and their greenish ovaries can be seen through the skin before spawning. In the wild, the fish spawn communally in very shallow water. A few hundred greenish eggs are laid among the roots of floating plants. Kuhli loaches reach maturity at 7 cm and have a maximum length of 10 cm. This fish can live for up to about 14 years.

The natural habitat of the kuhli loach is the sandy beds of slow-moving rivers and clean mountain streams. The kuhli loach is a bottom dweller that burrows into soft places. They are a social fish and are typically found in small clusters(they are not schooling fish but enjoy the company of their species), but are cautious and nocturnal by nature and swim near the bottom where they feed around obstacles. Kuhli loaches are scavengers, so they will eat anything that reaches the bottom. They usually feed at night, but can be taught to feed in the day in the home aquarium.

The kuhli loach is commonly kept as a pet in tropical aquaria. In an aquarium, the kuhli loach can be very reclusive and, when startled, will dart underneath tank ornaments or bury itself, if a fine gravel or sandy substrate is present. There are a number of species of the genus Pangio that appear similar and are sold under the same name, require similar care, and are all excellently suited for household tanks. They tend to be hardy and long-lived in the aquarium and get along well with their own kind as well as others.
