Order Perciformes Family Blenniidae (Combtooth blennies)
(Variable sabretooth blenny).
Petroscirtes variabilis(Cantor, 1849). 15cm TL
D/spine 9-11, soft ray 16-19. A/spine 2, soft rays 16-19. P2/spine 1, soft ray 3.

Order Perciformes Family Blenniidae (Combtooth blennies)
Variable sabretooth blenny
Petroscirtes variabilis(Cantor, 1849). 15cm TL
Korean name; Ge-be-do-ra-chi(개베도라치)
D/spine 9-11, soft ray 16-19. A/spine 2, soft rays 16-19. P2/spine 1, soft ray 3.

Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/Jeju Island of Korea, Yaeyama Islands of Japan, Taiwan, Fiji, Sri Lanka, southern Great Barrier Reef.
General; With an elongated body, a blunt squarish snout. Posterior nostril usually with a short flap on anterior rim; cirrus on chin unbranched; cirri on head variably present or absent. The lower jaw has a pair of long curved fangs. It lacks scales and has a continuous dorsal fin along the body length which it holds up rather handsomely when alarmed. Caudal fin slightly rounded with no prolonged rays.

Sexually dimorphic: males are orange-brown while females are sea-green dorsally and lighter below. Similar to P. breviceps in shape but has a blotched, rather than lined pattern on the body. There are six large irregular dark blotches along upper side. In some case with greenish yellow belly. Some color form are probably habitat related. The plain form is mainly green and has numerous tiny pearly spots and occurs in seagrass beds.

Adults occur in seagrass beds of shallow lagoons. Also in Sargassum rafts during or immediately after wet season. They feed primarily on small crustaceans and occasionally on scales from fishes. Blennies in Genus Petroscirtes have fang-like teeth with venom glands at their bases(more information; read family page). Oviparous. Eggs are demersal and adhesive, and are attached to the substrate via a filamentous, adhesive pad or pedestal. Larvae are planktonic, often found in shallow, coastal waters.
