분포; 서북태평양/한국의 제주도, 일본 남부, 타이완, 중국 남부, 홍콩에 분포한다.
일반개요; 암컷으로 태어났다가 필요에 따라 일부가 수컷 성어로 변하는 암수한몸이다. 수컷에서 다시 암컷으로 변하는 양방향 성전환(Bi-directional sex change)이 관찰되었다. 9~14cm 정도 크기의 개체가 암컷에서 수컷으로 성전환을 한다. 큰 수컷 성어는 주둥이에서부터 눈 뒤로 이어진 검은 선 중 밑의 선이 무점황놀래기처럼 아래로 휘어지지 아니하고 가슴지느러미 위로 직진하며 젊은 수컷과 암컷은 아가미뚜껑에서 끝난다. 성어는 체측 중심 위 등쪽 몸에 좌우 방향으로 백색 반점들이 2~3 개의 열을 지어 나타난다. 수컷 성어는 주홍색이며 깊은 수심에 있을 때는 붉은 벽돌색이다. 수컷의 혼인색은 황토색이다. 그러나 해양 환경에 따라 또는 암수 변환 과정에서 녹색으로 변하는 등 다양한 색이 나타난다. 제4~5 극조 하단에 검은 반점이 있다. 등지느러미의 첫 가시, 뒷지느러미의 3번 가시. 밑 배지느러미 가시가 무점황놀래기보다 악간 짧다. 암컷은 살아있을 때 노랑색이 많은 주황색이다. 등지느러미는 선명한 노란색이며 뒤쪽으로 갈수록 옅어진다. 보통 2~5m 수심 바위 지대에 있다. 육식성으로 주로 저서생물이나 해조류 사이의 소형갑각류나 패류를 잡아먹으며, 먹이 활동은 낮에 이루어지고 밤에는 바위 밑에 숨어 잠을 잔다. 겨울에는 모래 속에 몸을 숨기고 동면한다.

Distribution; Northwest Pacific/Jeju Island, southern Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
General; 2 dark stripes start from snout to posterior head, of which the lower stripe extending straightly above pectoral fin in adult male, in subadults this stripe stops at middle of opercle. A few rows of white dots on upper half of the body. Body color of terminal male reddish(sometimes greenish; variable with environment), turn brick red in deep water, the nuptial color yellowish brown, large blackish blotch on spinous dorsal fin area between 4th~6th spines. Female reddish yellow. Lengths of the first dorsal, third anal and pelvic spines somewhat shorter than those of P. eoethinus. Retires under low rock ledges at night. Feeds mainly on small benthic organisms (small crustaceans, mollusks and polychaete worms, sponges, coral polyps). Hibernates in the sand in winter. Bi-directional sex change has been confirmed for this species. Oviparous
