분포; 아시아/한국 특산종으로 서·남해로 흐르는 강이나 하천에 분포한다.
일반개요; 중고기와 비슷한데, 몸은 가늘고 길며 옆으로 납작하다. 머리도 옆으로 납작하고 주둥이의 앞쪽은 둥글다. 눈은 작고 머리 옆면 중앙보다 약간 앞쪽의 위에 있으며 두 눈 사이가 넓다. 입은 작고 주둥이 밑에 있으며 입구석에는 아주 작은 수염이 있다. 아래턱은 위턱보다 짧으며 윗입술은 얇고 가늘다. 비늘은 비교적 큰 편이다.

등지느러미가 거의 삼각형이다. 뒷지느러미는 등지느러미보다 훨씬 뒤에 달려 있고 모양은 비슷하나 작다. 가슴지느러미는 비교적 넓고 아가미뚜껑 뒤의 배쪽에 붙어 있다. 배지느러미는 등지느러미보다 약간 뒤에서 시작하며 작고 가장자리가 둥글다. 꼬리지느러미는 갈라져 있으며 위아래 조각의 모양이 거의 같고 끝이 둥글다.
측선은 완전하고 거의 직선이다.

몸 빛깔은 등쪽이 암녹색이고 배쪽은 담백색이다. 옆구리 중앙에는 길고 어두운 세로띠가 있고 몸 후반부에 가서 특히 분명해진다. 여기에 있는 비늘은 그 뒷가장자리가 넓은 흑갈색으로 되어 있고 이들이 불규칙하게 배치되어 중고기속(屬/genus Sarcocheilichthys)의 특색인 상하 작은 반점으로 된 짧은 띠 모양의 흩어진 구름무늬를 이룬다. 이 무늬는 나이가 많을수록 희미해진다. 등지느러미 기조 중앙부에는 폭이 넓은 흑색띠가 있으나, 중고기와는 달리 꼬리지느러미에 어두운 줄무늬가 없다. 사는 곳에 따라 몸 색과 무늬에 차이가 있다. 성숙한 수컷은 각 지느러미에 진한 남흑색을 보인다. 산란기에 수컷의 주둥이 주변에는 돌기가 돋아나고 몸통에 황색과 초록색(섬진강 서식), 파란색(낙동강 서식)이 더해지며, 등지느러미, 가슴지느러미 및 뒷지느러미는 주황색을 띠며, 꼬리지느러미 기조의 아랫부분에도 주황색을 나타낸다.

물 맑은 하천에서 살며 주로 물풀이나 돌 밑에 숨어 지내고 평상시 유영하는 모습은 경쾌하다. 수생곤충, 유충, 실지렁이 등을 잡아먹는다. 산란기는 4∼6월로 이 시기에 암컷은 산란관을 길게 내어 담수산 이매패의 새강에 산란을 한다. 알은 조개 속에서 발생하고 부화한 새끼는 조개 밖으로 헤엄쳐 나온다.

Distribution; Asia/endemic to Korea, found in streams flow to west and south coasts.
General; Similar to Korean oily shinner(Sarcocheilichthys nigripinnis), but body thinner than S, nigripinnis. Body elongated and laterally compressed. Head also compressed and snout tip rounded. Eye small, placed close to dorso-head and slightly ahead of head center. Orbital space broad. Mouth small and placed below snout, with a pair of very small barbels at the corner of mouth. Lower jaw shorter than upper jaw, upper lip thin and slender. Scales relatively large.

Dorsal fin with almost triangular shape. Anal fin located far behind dorsal fin, their shapes similar each other but anal fin is smaller. Pectoral fin relatively broad, placed close to abdomen and close to gill opening. Pelvic fin with rounded margin begins from slightly behind the origin of dorsal fin. Caudal fin deeply emarginated, both lobes symmetrical in shape and tips rounded. Lateral line complete and almost straight. 

Dorsal area with dark greenish brown color, silvery white ventrally. Long dark stripe along flank that is more distinct in the posterior part. Irregular longitudinal dark blotches scattered along flank. These marks gradually fades as aging. A dark band on mid area of dorsal fin, contrary to Korean oily shinner(Sarcocheilichthys nigripinnis), this fish has no dark mark on caudal fin. Color and marks somewhat different between inhabiting localities. Old adult male with deep bluish black colors on fins. In spawning season, male gets warts on snout, and adding scarlet tints on fins including lower edge of caudal fin. And the body is added yellowish, greenish or bluish hue according to locations.

Found in clear streams, usually swims briskly and hide in weeds or bottoms of stones. Feed on aquatic insects, larvae, thread worms. Spawn in April to June, Female has an ovipositor which is used to deposit eggs inside bivalves. Eggs hatches inside the shell and come out.
