Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/East African coasts, Mauritius, Madagascar, southern India, Sri Lanka, Viet Nam, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, south sea of Korea, Japan and south to northern Australia, possibly also western coasts of Australia). General; One of the most abundant Sardinella species in the Indo-West Pacific region. Body oval shape, compressed but cross section thick like the Sardinops melanostictus. Body moderately slender, its depth usually 24 to 30% standard length; Lower jaw longer than upper jaw, mouth open upward direction. With well developed keel scutes. Dorsal fin origin placed ahead of pelvic fin. Blue grey dorsally, silvery white ventrally. A golden mid-lateral line on flank when alive. Dorsal and caudal fin margins dusky; a dark spot at dorsal fin origin. Forms schools in coastal waters. Adults feed on phytoplankton and zooplankton(crustacean and molluscan larvae). Juveniles predominantly prefer crustaceans expanding to include phytoplankton in the diet as their length increases. Marketed fresh, dried-salted, boiled or made into fish balls.
