Distribution; Indo-Pacific/Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands and French Polynesia, Galapagos, south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia. north to Southeast Asia, southern Japan, and southern sea and Jeju Island in Korea. Also found in Mediterranean Sea.
General; The scientific name of “Nol-lak-gam-peng” in Korean is Scorpaenopsis diabolus, but there is some confusion because some Korean sources describe the scientific name as Scorpaenopsis gibbosa(English name: Humpbacked scorpionfish). The two scientific names are not synonym relation but completely different species. Scorpaenopsis gibbosa is not distributed in Korea and is described as being distributed only in the Indian Ocean off eastern Africa. They look so similar that it is difficult to distinguish them.

The false stonefish has broad head with pointed snout, wide mouth, humped back, and tapering body. The upper post temporal spine is branched. This character is not found in any other species of Scorpaenopsis. With about 45 vertical scale rows. The skin is rough with low conical projections, spines, and tassels. Lacrimal bone with 2 or 3 spines over maxillary, first points forward, followed by 1 or by 2 close-set spines which point down and back. There are usually more than 4~10 short spines on the suborbital ridge, each of which is of different size and is not arranged in rows. A shallow pit below front corner of eye.

The body color changes in various ways according to the color of the environment in which it is located, so it is difficult to say the specific color of this fish. The pattern also matches the object(or background) next to it. When it is in a sandy or rocky field, it takes the shape of a rock or stone that is or could be in that environment. However, when it is on a colored object such as coral or sponge, it shows colorful colors so it does not look like a rock.

The pectoral fin is large, and the color of the inner side(back side) is always colorful, with orange and black patterns on white background. When a predator approaches, the colorful color of the back side suddenly flutters, startling the approacher.

S. diabolus exhibits biofluorescence, that is, when illuminated by blue or ultraviolet light, it re-emits it as red, and appears differently than under white light illumination. Biofluorescence may assist in intraspecific communication and camouflage. Inhabitant of rubble or weedy coralline-rock bottoms of reef flats and lagoon and seaward reefs. It can be found at depths of 1 m to 70 m. It relies on its camouflage and ambush to catch passing prey, the fish is well-camouflaged among stones and corals, often partly buried. feeds on passing prey such as invertebrates and small fish. Solitary or in pairs. Can inflict a painful injury with its venomous dorsal sting.

[About the Stonefish and Rockfish]
The English common name for the Nol-lak-gam-pen(in Korean) is False Stonefish, and the word " False=fake" comes from the fact that their camouflaged appearance resembles that of a fish in the family Synanceiidae. There are two similar fish names in Order Scorpaeniformes, Stonefishes, and Rockfishes, which are often confused. Of course, Stone and Rock have different definitions, but Stonefish and Rockfish both commonly mean fish that look like stone(or small rock). Here no difference between stone and rock. In English, the fishes in family Synanceiidae(order Scorpaeniformes) are collectively called Stonefishes, and the various species in family Sebastidae(order Scorpaeniformes) are collectively called Rockfishes. Whether Stonefish or Rockfish, they are both named because they camouflage themselves like stones(or small rock lumps) that are thrown away on the seabed. Who gets the name Stonefish and who gets the name Rockfish seems to have no special meaning, as it was simply decided to distinguish the group of species.
