분포; 인도-서태평양/남아프리카, 홍해, 오스트레일리아에서부터 타이완, 일본, 한국의 제주도까지 분포한다.
일반개요; ※2019년 4월에 제주도 남부 해안에서 전장 1,302 mm 크기의 곰치류가 1마리 채집되었는데 이것을 연구해 본 결과 학명이 Strophidon sathete 었으며 한국 미기록종으로 밝혀져 2020년 3월에 한국어류학회지에 발표되었다(논문 저자/김병엽, 고수진, 김맹진, 송춘복).

한국 국명은 “가는곰치”로 제안(2020년 3월의 논문)되었지만 곰치류 중에서 가장 긴 종이며 영명도 “Slender giant moray”라는 점으로 보아 영명을 직역한, 이미 통용되고 있던 이름인, “날씬대왕곰치”가 더 와 닿는다. 곰치과 중에서 가장 긴 종이다. 몸이 매우 길고 가늘다. 몸의 앞 부분은 원통형이며 항문 뒤 꼬리 쪽으로는 측편되었다. 머리와 몸통의 경계선 구분이 어렵다. 꼬리의 길이는 항문 전 몸 길이 보다 훨씬 더 길다. 등지느러미는 잘 발달되었고 높은 편이다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미는 꼬리지느러미와 이어져 있다. 가슴지느러미와 배지느러미는 없다. 비늘이 없다. 항문은 몸의 중간 보다 앞에 있다. 입이 매우 크며 눈 뒤를 넘어 연장되어 있다. 주둥이는 약간 둥글며 눈 지름의 2배로 짧다. 눈이 작다. 앞 콧구멍은 짧고 단조로운 튜브형이다. 뒤콧구멍은 눈의 위 또는 눈 앞의 위치에서 위로 머리 꼭대기 쪽에 있으며 단순하게 생긴 구멍이거나 튜브 형이다. 아가미 구멍은 작은 둥근 구멍형이거나 동전구멍형(slit)이다. 측선 구멍은 몸에는 없고 아가미 구멍 전 위치에서 그 위쪽에 1개 또는 2개가 있다. 머리는 길며 감각공은 눈 위쪽에 3개(superorbital pores/안상골공). 눈 아래 쪽에 4개(infraobital pores/안하골공), 아래턱에 6개(mandibular pores)가 있다. 신선할 때 몸색은 무늬 없이 전체적으로 황갈색이며 몸 아래쪽은 연한 색이며 등지느러미, 뒷지느러미, 꼬리지느러미는 암갈색이다. 

바다와 기수 지역의 뻘 바닥에 산다. 그러나 내만이나 강에서 발견될 때도 있다. 작은 물고기와 갑각류를 먹는다. 꼬리 쪽은 굴 집에 박아 놓은 상태에서, 몸을 굴 밖 수직으로 수면 바로 아래까지 올려 세우고, 머리는 수평으로 숙이고 조수의 높이에 따라 몸 높이를 맞추어 가면서 시간을 보내고 있는 모습이 관찰된 것으로 알려져 있다. 단독 생활을 한다. 서식지 지방에서 생선 상품으로 거래 된다. 가장 긴 날씬대왕곰치 포획 기록은 1927년 호주 퀸즈랜드주 마루치 강에서 있었으며 전장 3.94 m였다.

Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/South Africa, Red Sea, Australia to Taiwan, Japan and Jeju Island in Korea.
General; The longest member of the family of moray eels. Body very elongated, cylindrical, slightly compressed behind anus. Head not obviously distinct from trunk. Tail much longer than preanal length. Dorsal fin elevated, well developed. Dorsal and anal fins confluent with caudal fin. Pectoral and pelvic fins absent, absent in scales. Anus located before midbody. Very large mouth, extending to well beyond eye. Snout blunt and short(two times of eye diameter). Eye small. Anterior nostrils with simple short tubes. Posterior nostril high on the head, above or before the eye, a simple pore or in a tube, gill opening a small round hole or slit. Lateral-line pores absent on the body except for one or two above and before gill opening Head long with pores typical, three superorbital pores, four infraobital pores, six mandibular pores. 1~4 branchial pores. Coloration; when fresh, body uniformly brown head, body and fins with unpatterned coloration, lighter below, dorsal, anal and caudal fin dark brown. 

Inhabits muddy ocean bottoms and estuarine areas, but sometimes found in rivers and inner bays.
Feeds mainly on a variety of small fishes and crustaceans. Known to extend itself vertically from a burrow with its head held horizontally beneath the surface, rising and falling with the tide. Solitary. Marketed fresh and consumed locally. The longest recorded specimen was caught in 1927, on the Maroochy River in Queensland; it measured 3.94 metres.
