(Picturesque dragonet/spotted mandarin)
Synchiropus picturatus(Peters, 1877). 7.0 cm TL
D/spine4 soft rays 8 . A/soft rays 7. P1/31(i+30).  Caudal fin/10(i+8+i) ; 만다린피시의 데이터임.

이 물고기들은 “cyanophores(청색 세포)”를 만들어낸다. “Blue chromatophores(청색색소세포)”를 줄임 말로 cyanophores(시아노포어)라 한다.

Distribution; Indo-West Pacific/Taiwan, Philippines, eastern Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, northwest Australia, and Papua New Guinea.
General; The picturesque dragonet is a brightly colored member of the dragonets. Also commonly known in aquarium trade as the spotted mandarin, psychedelic mandarin or target mandarin. The head, fins, and body are a psychedelic combination of blue, orange, and black spots on a green base. The spots with black center concentric rings. Also the ventral part, normally hidden, shows the prolongation of the rings tapering into bands to reach the other side. The iris, yellow-orange, is surrounded by a rayed mimetic design that resumes the colors of the body. At the level of the peduncle the circles transform in a showy vertical band where the black color is predominant. The caudal fin, rounded, tends like the pectoral and the ventral ones to the reddish to end greenish with a last yellowish small border.

The body is elongated and cylindriform, with close eyes and protruding from the head that, seen from above, reveals triangular and pointed. The mouth is protractile with various rows of tiny teeth. The morphology of the fins is very similar to that of the congener Synchiropus splendidus. Also here there are two dorsal fins and the first, roundish in the females, is particularly elongated in the males. This is practically the only element of sexual dimorphism. Males may be distinguished from females only by their more-elongated first dorsal spine. Under the skin of the preopercula stands a hidden spine that serves as defense and in the territorial fights among males. The openings of the gills are reduced to small orifices.

Found on sandy bottoms of shallow sheltered reefs. Depth usually 0 - 20 m. Secretive in rubble below living coral. Feeds on small benthic invertebrates. Forms small loose groups. The picturesque dragonet may grow to a size of 7 cm in length. For the marriage the spouses rise to the surface embraced where, after complicated rituals, the fecundation takes place belly to belly while entrusting the floating eggs to the currents.

It has no scales, but the body is protected by mucus, They have thick slime on their skin that inhibits many types of parasitic infection and minimizes the risk of disease following stress or physical trauma. and has a decidedly repellent odor that the predators quickly associate to the unmistakable livery. This seems to help protect them from some other more aggressive fish. Feed on mainly ostracods. and harpacticoid copepods but also of eggs of mollusks, fishes and larval stages of various species.

<Secret system of coloration> Synchiropus picturatus is one of only two vertebrate species in the world that can produce its own blue colouring through cellular pigment, along with its close relative, mandarinfish(S. splendidus). Synchiropus picturatus produces 'cyanophores' - blue pigmented. The name "cyanophore" was proposed for the blue chromatophores, or pigment-containing and light-reflecting cells. The vast majority of blue-hued creatures on earth have to resort to elaborate optical illusions to brighten themselves up, with microscopic layers of colourless crystals in their skin layered in such a way that they reflect blue light back at any onlooker.
