Order Perciformes Family Gobiidae(Gobies)
Magnificent shrimpgoby
Tomiyamichthys emilyae(Allen, Erdmann & Utaman, 2019). Max length/male 3.2 cm SL; female 4.4 cm SL
Other English name/Emily’s shrimpgoby and Magnificent fan shrimp goby.
D/spines 7, soft rays, 10. A/spines 1, soft rays 10. Pectoral fin/15–17. Vertebrae/26. Lateral scales/66–72. Transverse scales/19–21

Distribution; Western Pacific/North Sulawesi Province, Bali, Lembeh Strait, Indonesia. Philippines(Mindoro). Ryukyu Islands of Japan.
General; The Magnificent shrimpgoby has attracted a lot of attention from the aquarium fish industry and underwater photography divers because of its gorgeous appearance. People in this field have long introduced the scientific name of this fish as “Flabelligobius sp”. This name can be interpreted as a species of the genus Flabelligobius, and the species name (species epithet) not determined. However, the scientific name Flabelligobius did and does not exist in the scientific community. There was no scientific name for this fish because the ichthyology community had not yet identified it, but it seems to have been named arbitrarily because the aquarium fish industry had to give it a scientific name anyway. The Magnificent shrimpgoby was officially given the scientific name(Tomiyamichthys emilyae) in August 2019, and the holotype was collected from Lembe Island, Sulawesi, Indonesia at a depth of between 17 to 23m.

Body elongate, body and head compressed. Interorbital extremely narrow, eye of each side in contact. Mouth terminal, oblique, and large, forming an angle of about 30° to horizontal axis of body, reaching vertical near middle of pupil. Upper and lower jaw with several rows of conical teeth, including three pairs of enlarged, recurved, well-spaced teeth at front of jaw, no teeth on vomer or palatines. Posterior nostril a large oval aperture in front of center of eye. Anterior nostril sheathed in elongate, partially enclosed tube.

First dorsal fin large and sail-like without filamentous rays, its origin slightly behind rear base of pelvic fins and membrane behind last spine confluent with base of second dorsal fin. Dorsal-fin spines slender and flexible. fourth dorsal-fin spine longest.  Caudal fin ovate, longer than head length. Origin of anal fin below origin of second dorsal-fin. Gill opening extending forward to level of middle of opercle. Scales entirely cycloid, progressively larger posteriorly; scales absent on head, pectoral-fin base, prepelvic area, and anterior portion of abdomen. No scales on fins except about three rows at base of caudal fin.

[Color in life] The sexual differentiation between the males and females; while both sexes have the same sail-like first dorsal fin with leopard like spotting, only the male has the lighter, more colorful orange to light brown base color that makes the spots really stand out. Head and body generally dark brown except for 10–12 inconspicuous, narrow, lighter-brown bars on side from just behind pectoral-fin base to caudal peduncle. Numerous small white spots on dorsal and side of head, snout, nape, pectoral-fin base, and anteriormost body, the white spots(sometimes orange) on side of head and anterior body often faint or absent, but can be quickly intensified. Lips brown to pale orange with small white spots.  Iris of eye orange with fine white speckling and white spots on dorsal scleral surface. First dorsal fin of female pale grey with leopard-like pattern of brown spots, first dorsal fin of male pale grey grading to orange, sometimes mainly orange or yellow with a pattern of similar dark spots.

On the second dorsal fin, there are 3 to 4 rows of large dark brown spots in approximately horizontal direction, and light gray is interposed between these patterns and with a relatively narrow outer margin of orange(female) or orangish brown(male). Background color of caudal fin light brown with large number of large blackish brown spots occupying most of the area, and with bright blue streaks between each ray on ventral two-thirds. Outer margin of caudal fin orange red. Anal and pelvic fins dark brown with bright blue streaks between each ray. Pectoral fin variably pigmented, some individuals with entirely transparent membranes and well-contrasted dark fin rays, others mainly dark brown on distal half of fin and transparent on outer portion with well-contrasted dark-brown rays.

[Color in preservative] Head and body generally dark brown except lighter brown with white spotting on dorsal surface of head and small whitish spots on lips. First dorsal fin brown with darker leopard-like spot pattern; second dorsal fin brown with about 7 oblique rows of large dark-brown spots. Caudal fin mainly dark brown, except dorsalmost portion lighter brown with several large dark-brown spots. Anal fin and pelvic fins dark brown. Pectoral fins dark brown basally and translucent on distal half with well-contrasted dark-brown rays. Magnificent shrimpgoby is distributed from Indonesia to the north to southern Japan, but most of the individuals traded in the aquarium fish market are those collected in Sibu, Philippines. It is known to be up to 6.6cm in total length, but the real thing is much smaller than this. It lives in depths of 15-40 m and it lives commensally with the red banded pistol shrimp(Alpheus randalli), one of the nicest goby hole mates. Make burrows underneath live rock and that it is also a sand sifter, a unique behavior for such a small fish. Other goby species similar to this fish is Smith's shrimpgoby(Tomiyamichthys smithi).
