농어목 바리과 Order Perciformes Family Serranidae(sea basses, groupers, fairy basslets)

분포; 서북태평양: 한국의 제주도 포함 남해, 일본 남부, 타이완, 동중국해, 중국 남부에 분포한다.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었고 아가미뚜껑에 2개의 가시가 있다. 갈색 또는 회갈색 바탕에 오렌지색 점들이 조밀하게 배열되어 있으며 색상의 농도 변화가 심하다. 등지느러미 극조부 가장자리는 좁게 노랗거나 오렌지색이다. 가슴지느러미를 제외한 모든 지느러미에 오렌지색이나 칙칙한 황색의 점들이 열 지어 있다. 죽은 개체는 점들의 색깔이 희미해진다. 몸에 수직방향으로 대여섯 개의 희미한 구름무늬가 있으며 몸체 중간에 있는 구름무늬는 그 등쪽 가장자리에서 검다. 고급 식용어이며 멸종위기 종이다. 홍콩의 활어 시장에서 판매되고 있는 그루퍼로 많이 알려져 있다.

Distribution: Northwest Pacific: southern Korea, southern Japan, Taiwan, East China Sea, southern China.
General: Head and body compressed. 2 spines on opercle. Head and body brown with dense reddish-orange spots when alive(reddish-orange spots becoming light spots in spirits). Sometimes with indistinct several vertical blotches on body, the middle one black at the dorsal fin base. Dorsal fin margin yellow or orange; row of dusky yellow or orange spots along middle of the spinous dorsal fin and another row along the base of the fin; faint red or orange spots at caudal and anal fins. Found on rocky reefs. A highly prized food fish. Endangered species. Found in Hong Kong live fish markets.
