분포; 서북 태평양: 한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 타이완, 중국에 분포.
일반개요; 다갈색 바탕에 적갈색 또는 적색의 많은 점 무늬들이 균일하게 산재되어 있다. 점들의 색 농도는 전체에 걸쳐 일정하게 진하다. 등에 3개의 흑색반점이 있는데 뒤쪽 극조 3개에 걸쳐 1개, 연조부 중심부에 1개, 및 미병부 등쪽에 1개가 있다. 각 지느러미들은 어두운 편이며 가장자리가 좁게 흰색이 둘려져 있을 수도 있다. 연안의 바위지대나 산호초에 산다.
※한국동물명집에는 학명이 Epinephelus fario로 되어있으나 글로벌 자료를 검색해 보면 틀린 학명이다. Epinephelus fario는 글로벌 학계가 공인하지 않는 이름이며 이 종의 인정된 학명은 “Epinephelus longispinis(Kner, 1864)”로서 “Longspine grouper”라고 부르는 구루퍼이며 남아프리카와 반다 해에 사는 종이다.

Distribution: Northwest Pacific: southern Korea, southern Japan, Taiwan, China.
General: Colour is pale brown with many red or brown red spots. Blotches and spots on body equally deep in colour. Fins darker and often with a narrow white edge. Three black blotches on dorsal, one at the base of the last 3 dorsal-fin spines, one at the base of the middle dorsal-fin soft rays, and the third on top of the caudal peduncle. Juveniles are common in tide pools and in shallow clear water around rocks and coral reefs, adults found in deeper water. ※ This species’ registered name in official Korean fish guide books is ‘Epinephelus fario’, but this name is error.
